DESCRIPTION
Delivered at best value for the City of Phoenix Aviation Department, this major airfield paving project involved the complete reconstruction of the West Air Cargo (WAC) apron area at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX). To maintain uninterrupted PHX airside cargo and parking operations, the project was constructed in four carefully planned phases to mitigate impacts on PHX operations.
The scope included 87,654 SY (18.11 acres) of 19” thick P-501 PCCP aircraft apron, installed through 71 machine placements. All placements were slip-formed using automated total station technology for precise grade control and superior quality, marking the first use of this wire-free technology at PHX. All work was conducted within an active airfield operations area, with PCCP placements performed at night to prevent disruptions to airside gate operations.
