DESCRIPTION

This major I-40 bridge replacement project included the complete superstructure removal and replacement of two eight-span, 400’ long by 44’-10” wide bridge decks. Located five miles east of Winslow, Arizona, construction occurred over two phases with a winter shutdown to mitigate impacts to I-40. Temporary crossovers were built within the I-40 median for both phases to facilitate construction while maintaining both directions of I-40 as each independent bridge structure was reconstructed.

The project also involved the simultaneous hydraulic jacking of eight AASHTO Type II and 6 post-tensioned girders to replace parabolic rocker bearings and reset the keeper plates. Additionally, 18 new expansion joints were installed, and substantial substructure repairs were performed.
