DESCRIPTION

This award-winning project expanded the parking and storage capacity for inbound and outbound shipping containers at BNSF Railway’s intermodal facility in Glendale by fully developing a newly acquired property, Lot 6, and reconstructing existing Lot 5. The project had an aggressive schedule bounded with calculated milestones in order to not impact concurrent BNSF Operations or peak shipping seasons. BNSF’s Glendale IMF ran under 24/7 operation with incoming and outgoing trains every four hours that accounted for 685 daily shipping container lifts. Banicki worked diligently with BNSF Operations and Facility Maintenance to confirm train movements and to ensure our construction activities would not impact their transports. Banicki’s development and communication of comprehensive project scheduling, as well as diligent site security and delineation, were paramount to the success of the project and critical to keeping train activity and other complex operations active and undisturbed.

VALUE ENGINEERING

Banicki successfully value engineered the elimination of 6,803 SF of concrete retaining wall in order to better accommodate positive drainage across the large site area. Finished grade varied 18-24 inches between sections of Lot 6, thus the original design called for a four-foot cast-in-place retaining wall to be constructed to contain the new pavement at these grade variations. Banicki’s alternative to this design worked flawlessly and involved eliminating the retaining walls by grading a slope between grade variations and applying fiber reinforced shotcrete to the face of the slope after final paving.
