DESCRIPTION
This bridge and heavy highway project involved the construction of a new bridge structure on JW Powell Blvd spanning I-17, along with roadway realignment, civil upgrades, storm drain enhancements, and pedestrian improvements. The bridge incorporates aesthetic elements such as a rustication form liner finish on the abutment caps, piers, and bridge parapet, with the entire substructure and superstructure painted for visual cohesion. The structure utilizes 22 prestressed precast box girders (Type BII-48), each measuring 105’-3” to cover long spans with minimal vertical clearance.
With an extremely accelerated schedule, construction could not begin before April 1, 2024, with the new bridge required to be open to traffic by August 28, 2024. By deploying concurrent structures and heavy civil crews, Banicki met all scheduling milestones, completing the project two months ahead of schedule. The work was carefully managed across five maintenance of traffic phases, ensuring uninterrupted traffic flow on both I-17 and JW Powell Blvd throughout the project’s duration.
