DESCRIPTION
Delivered at best value for the City of Mesa, this flagship project completed the final segments (3 and 4) of the Rio Salado Pathway, constructing the last 1.27 miles of this beautifully landscaped and hardscaped route along the south bank of the Salt River, from SR-101L to Dobson Road. Designed to enhance connectivity and provide a scenic pathway for pedestrians and cyclists, the project showcases functional design integrated with the river’s natural landscape.
Segment 3
Segment 3 connects Mesa to Tempe, bridging a vital link in the regional non-motorized transportation network. This segment runs along a narrow right-of-way on a levee between the Salt River and retention ponds from the nearby wastewater treatment plant. Due to the limited space, the design prioritizes hardscaping, with structural elements prominently visible from nearby freeways, serving as a landmark for the regional trail system. The pathway design required precise engineering and adaptability to make the most of the constrained right-of-way.
Segment 4
Extending the pathway eastward, Segment 4 connects key Mesa destinations such as Riverview Park, Sloan Park, and the Mesa Riverview shopping area. Design features in this segment include safety railings with wave patterns and decorative fins that enhance both safety and aesthetic appeal. This pathway segment provides a secure and accessible route, seamlessly linking Tempe and Mesa and supporting non-motorized transportation across the Salt River corridor.
