DESCRIPTION
This project involved the complete deck demolition and replacement of a steel plate girder bridge on Hermosa Drive in Holbrook, Arizona. The two-lane bridge, spanning both directions of I-40, received a new deck measuring 322’ long by 31’-2” wide. Given the bridge’s narrow width and the need to maintain traffic flow, construction was carried out in two phases, with each half of the bridge deck completed separately. To ensure safety over I-40, a false deck was installed on the bottom flange of the girders, while intricate falsework was meticulously designed to support the overhangs between girder lines during each phase. Temporary traffic signals allowed a single lane of traffic to remain open throughout construction.
Additional structural work included hydraulic jacking of the bridge to reset elastomeric bearings and install new keeper plates, structural steel retrofitting, new steel diaphragms, new steel bearing stiffeners, 38” bridge parapet, barrier-to-guardrail transitions, approach slabs, expansion joints, methacrylate bridge seal, slope paving, substructure concrete repairs, lead abatement, and steel painting.
